Doomsday is coming...

Doomsday is coming...

I was very kindly sent the novel 'Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer' to read and review, my initial thoughts were that the blurb sounded interesting (Vikings, Gods, monsters and such).

The blurb:
Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Since his mother's mysterious death, he's lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving on his wits, keeping one step ahead of the police and the truant officers. One day, he's tracked down by an uncle he's never met - a man his mother claimed was dangerous. His uncle tells him an impossible secret: Magnus is the son of a Norse god. The Viking myths are true. The gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Trolls, giants and worse monsters are stirring for doomsday. To prevent Ragnarok, Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years. When an attack by fire giants forces him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents, Magnus makes a fatal decision. Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die...

I've been really into the supernatural and fantasy novels lately, I've read some really interesting novels and this one was no exception. It was a great and humorous read which made it enjoyable, I love the author's writing style, it was very sarcastic. Oh I should mention the author of this book (Rick Riordan) is also the guy who wrote The Percy Jackson Chronicles!

I loved the characters in this novel, the protagonist Magnus Chase (such a cool name) is the one who uses a lot of sarcasm, and just brings the book to life, even though he is dead...my attempt at creating an oxymoron. I also loved the elf's and dwarf's you come across, alongside the valkyrie's, they all make a great team. I love being transported to a world where weird and wonderful things exist, okay so mostly weird... and terrifying, but still slightly wonderful. If you count a talking severed head as wonderful.

When I first began the book I originally thought it was for younger readers, as the reviews in the front page were from young ages, but upon reading I learned that it was also suitable for my age range (19) as I thoroughly enjoyed it!! Some of the words were tricky (the God's names), but half of the time I'd just make them up.

I found the book very informative, as I really didn't know that much about Gods/Vikings before reading, but now I can say I know much more, even if I can't pronounce the names. So if you want to indulge in some historical knowledge and myths, here's your book!

I really recommend this book, it's great for escapism, if you want to zone out of reality and enter a world (well actually, there's Nine Worlds in this book, so if you can handle that, keep reading), pick this book up, it's a worthwhile read!

P.S. The angel prop had nothing to do with me creating anymore oxymorons, I know the book centres on death, it was just the nearest prop I reached for. Honestly...

You can buy the book here.

  1. I don't think a rick Riordan book can do a fantasy or mythical fan any wrong. I'm not a huge fan of the genre, I'll be honest, but the premise sounds extremely interesting! And oxymora for the win!

  4. My copy of this book has just been dispatched to me, and I can't wait for it to arrive. I've been a fan of Rick Riordan's since I read his Percy Jackson series and just know this is going to be another series that is amazing, so far he's done, Greek god's , Egyptian god's, mixed Greek and Roman god's to continue his Percy series and now this series.

  8. I usually don't read fantasy books but recently I have read a couple of them and I really enjoyed it. Just like you, I was reading a book that I felt might be directed at a younger audience but I still found it very interesting and I sometimes prefer reading teenage books - they make the world seem a bit easier. ;) xx
